About the Sinnemahoning Watershed Association

The Sinnemahoning Watershed Association brings together volunteers, partners, and local residents to care for the land and water that define our community. Through hands-on projects, educational programs, and advocacy efforts, we work to keep our streams clean, our habitats healthy, and our watershed resilient for the future.

Our Story

The Sinnemahoning Watershed Association (SWA) is a community-led group dedicated to protecting and restoring the Sinnemahoning Creek watershed. Formerly operating under the name Bucktail Watershed Association, our organization has deep roots in local conservation, tracing back to early citizen-led efforts focused on the Driftwood Branch and First Fork areas. Today, SWA continues that legacy with renewed energy and a broader watershed-wide mission.

Our Work

  • Cleanup Drives: Every spring, volunteers gather along PA-120 between Emporium and Driftwood to collect litter—usually about 40 bags along a 14-mile stretch—working with local partners like Mountaineer Search and Rescue and CCOYA.

  • Restoration Projects: In the past, we’ve partnered with the Cameron County Conservation District to plant trees and shrubs as part of stream and habitat restoration.

  • Water Quality Monitoring: We conduct ongoing efforts to monitor and safeguard the health of our watershed through sampling and data collection.
